Yarn repurposed:
more than artistic practices; they are acts of resiliency and repair.
In this body of work, yarn becomes a vehicle for healing and creativity. Drawing from my experience using yarn in art therapy with over a hundred children traumatized by Hurricane Katrina, I witnessed how knitting became a tool for emotional recovery. The children shared, “I am creating something from nothing! When I knit, I can’t think of anything but the yarn and needles. When I can’t sleep at night, I pretend to knit—and I fall asleep.”
I, too, use knitting to quiet my thoughts and find solace in repetition and rhythm. Through pulling and tugging, working through and letting go, the process transcends the domestic associations of yarn, transforming fiber into a medium of emotional, psychological, and creative restoration.
